About Me

Hi, my name is Helena, welcome to my website!

I am a registered Art Therapist working in private practice (HPCSA : AT 0001775/HCPC UK: AS 16941). I received my Master’s degree in Art Therapy at PennWest Edinboro University, in PA, USA. I have worked with a diverse range of clients in different countries such as Thailand, Costa Rica, UK and South Africa. I run art therapy groups at Akeso Clinics, and I am a part-time lecturer for the Master’s Art Therapy programme at the University of Johannesburg (UJ). This is the first university in South Africa to pioneer this profession. Go UJ!

I have been working in the mental health field since 2011 and I am so grateful for the personal growth these experiences have provided me over the years. I use the creative process to support my development and I am continuously learning and growing as a person. I live in Johannesburg with my family and dogs, and love spending time in nature. Needless to say, I love exploring with different art media and processes. I am also a Pilates and Yoga Instructor, Professional dancer, and Shinrin-yoku (forest bathing) practitioner (hence my gravitation towards breathing, movement, and being inspired by nature).

I have worked with many individuals and groups who arrived with various struggles and difficulties. During this time, I have found art to be great medium to help people express their thoughts more clearly so that awareness and meaning can take place. We all have unique stories to tell and once we allow them to unfold, personal transformation can begin.

Approach

I am sensitive to the larger cultural, spiritual, and family contexts that shape and inform us. I am trained in a number of approaches, such as Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, Jungian therapy, Person-Centred therapy, Mentalization-based Treatment (MBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Mindfulness-Based therapy (MBT), and Eco-art therapy. This allows me to work integratively to ensure that each person’s unique personality and situation is treated accordingly.

My experience includes working with clients from many different spheres of life, from different backgrounds, religions, cultures, and places. I provide support for individuals and groups who are going through difficult life transitions, and/or who are struggling with anxiety, stress, depression, bereavement, trauma, low self-esteem, gender or sexual identity/issues, substance misuse, eating disorders, self-harm, relational difficulties, physical/emotional abuse, and others. I offer a supportive, mindful and creative space for my clients to imbue a deeper sense of self-awareness and self-compassion.

Why Ruby Mountain?

My vision for Ruby Mountain comes from the metaphor of the mountain we are climbing on our journey through life. Although the mountain may feel like a steep, uphill, climb, it has the potential of becoming a path where we feel understood, witnessed, and emotionally supported. My hope is that there will be times on this journey where you will feel positive shifts that guide you and motivate you to find those ‘rubies’, whatever this may mean for you. I think of the rubies being the blossoms on Cherry Blossom trees, which come and go throughout the seasons, bringing us hope, insight, or pleasure, and allowing us to be fully present in those moments. Life can sometimes be a difficult journey, but it can also become richer through those precious, joyful phases where we have turned a corner and no longer feel stuck, helpless, or alone.
